macOS only remembers the most recent copy, and a new copy overwrites it instantly. The moment you copy a second thing, the first is gone. A clipboard history is a small utility that records every text copy you make so you can search it, pin snippets you reuse, and recover what was just overwritten. What a clipboard history actually solves
The clipboard on macOS is a one-slot buffer. Every new copy silently discards the last one. The everyday pain shows up in three situations:
- The accidental overwrite. You copy a new URL or ID and the previous one vanishes before you paste it.
- The repeated snippet. You re-type the same support email, address, or boilerplate response ten times a day.
- The lost detail. You copied a serial number from a settings page, switched apps, and now you cannot remember where the setting lived.
ClipDeck is built for this. It captures every text copy in the background, indexes it for full-text search, and lets you pin snippets that need to stay at the top. Plain text, URLs, and file paths are supported.
What you need. macOS 13 or later on Apple Silicon (M1 or later). ClipDeck's current clipboard history features do not request Accessibility, Screen Recording, or any other macOS privacy grant. There is nothing to enable in System Settings before you start.
Step-by-step workflow
- Install and launch ClipDeck. Open the DMG, drag ClipDeck to Applications, and launch it. The app lives in the menu bar — there is no main window to manage.
- Copy as usual. ClipDeck records every text copy in the background while you work. Nothing changes about how you copy.
- Open the history. Click the ClipDeck menu bar icon to open the searchable list whenever you need an earlier copy.
- Search to find anything. Type into the search field to filter across your entire history. The list narrows as you type.
- Restore or pin. Click an item to put it back on the clipboard and switch to the app that needs it. Pin the snippets you use constantly so they stay at the top.
Patterns that get the most out of a clipboard history
Once the history is running, a small set of habits makes it feel indispensable:
- Pin the boring stuff. Support emails, address blocks, your own phone number, the boilerplate response you send weekly. Pinned items stay at the top and never scroll away.
- Search before you re-type. The instinct to re-type a long URL or a hex value is the thing a history replaces. Search first.
- Recover from overwrites. When you copy a second thing and the first vanishes, the first is still in the history. Open ClipDeck and restore.
- Pair with screen OCR. If you frequently copy text that is not selectable (error dialogs, paused video, remote desktops), combine ClipDeck with PixelScan so recognized text can be kept in your clipboard workflow.
Limits to be aware of
ClipDeck is a clipboard history, not a clipboard sync service. It does not sync clipboard items across devices and does not store rich-text formatting, images, or shared team snippet libraries. For cross-device sync or image clipboard history, you need a different category of tool.
Permissions and privacy, plainly
